Google's current guidance for AI features in Search says there are no additional technical requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode. To qualify as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. Google separately recommends crawlable internal links, useful visible text, good page experience, and structured data that matches that text. This is why an “AI-ready website” is not a separate magic layer. It is a well-built website with information that people and machines can both evaluate.
The seven hidden foundations to check before hiring
1. Are the service, location, and business entity unambiguous?
A Los Angeles service-business site should make the basics easy to verify: the business name, services, customers served, real operating or service area, contact path, and the relationship between each service and location page.
Do not ask an agency to repeat “Los Angeles web design” across every paragraph. Ask it to create pages with specific purposes. A web design page should explain the problems addressed, scope, process, constraints, and next step. A location reference should be truthful and useful to the customer rather than a list of city names added only for keywords.

2. Does each important page answer one real question in a semantic structure?
A stylish page can still be vague. Important information should exist as readable text in the rendered page—not only inside an image, animation, video, or script-dependent interaction. Use one clear page topic, a direct answer near the top, descriptive headings, useful lists or tables, and crawlable links to relevant detail.
Google recommends people-first content that leaves the intended audience with enough information to achieve its goal. Its link guidance also explains why crawlable links and descriptive anchor text help people and Google understand connected pages.
For a service business, that structure should lead to a real action: compare an option, understand a limitation, request an assessment, or contact the correct team. It should not be a long introduction built around a keyword.
Ask the agency: Can you show the outline, direct answer, internal-link plan, and intended next action for every primary service page?
3. Are canonical and language signals correct?
Metadata is not a substitute for content, but it prevents avoidable ambiguity. Every indexable page should have a specific title and description, a stable URL, and a canonical decision. When the site has English and Chinese versions, each translation should have its own URL and the language alternatives should point to one another.
Google describes a canonical URL as the representative URL for duplicate or very similar pages; canonical signals are hints, not commands. Its canonical guidance recommends consistent internal links and supports self-referential canonicals. Its localized-page guidance explains reciprocal hreflang relationships for language versions.
Ask the agency: For any English page, can you identify its canonical URL and its exact Chinese alternate—and show the same relationship in reverse?
4. Does structured data tell the same story as the visible page?
Structured data can identify a business, article, breadcrumb, service context, or other supported entity in a standardized format. It should clarify what is already true on the page, not manufacture facts the customer cannot see.
Google's structured-data policies require markup to represent the main visible content and warn against hidden, irrelevant, or misleading information. Correct markup creates eligibility for supported search features; it does not guarantee a rich result, ranking, or AI citation.
For a local business, structured data should agree with visible contact and location facts. Do not accept fake ratings, invented service areas, or schema copied from another company.
Ask the agency: Which schema types will be used, which visible facts support every property, and how will the output be tested after deployment?
5. Are robots.txt, sitemap.xml, and AI crawler rules treated as different controls?
These files are frequently sold as interchangeable “AI SEO” features. They are not.
robots.txtexpresses crawler-access rules. It is not a privacy control and is not a reliable way to remove a URL from search.sitemap.xmlhelps search engines discover canonical URLs. It does not guarantee crawling, indexing, ranking, or citation.- AI crawler controls are product-specific. OpenAI, for example, documents OAI-SearchBot for search and GPTBot for potential model training as separate controls.

Ask the agency: What does each file control, who approves crawler policies, and is the sitemap generated and validated during the build?
6. Does the complete mobile journey perform and remain accessible?
“Fast” is not a visual style. Test real pages on representative phones and connections: first load, navigation, service comparison, form entry, validation, and confirmation. Watch for oversized images, delayed content, unstable buttons, blocked interaction, unreadable contrast, broken keyboard order, and unclear form labels.
Google's Core Web Vitals guidance currently defines good field-performance thresholds as LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds, and CLS under 0.1. Those measurements are useful quality signals, not a ranking guarantee. Accessibility also reaches beyond an automated score: the W3C WCAG overview distinguishes testable success criteria across content, structure, presentation, and interaction.
Ask the agency: Which mobile journeys will be tested, what field and lab measurements will be recorded, and what acceptance criteria apply before launch?
7. Will your business own the website and its operating accounts?
Design quality does not resolve operational dependency. The agreement should identify who owns or controls the domain, DNS, source repository, hosting or deployment account, analytics property, Search Console property, content, licensed assets, backups, and maintenance access.
Google's Search Console permissions documentation says an owner has full control over the property and can add or remove users. The business should retain an appropriate verified-owner path rather than depend on a single vendor account.
Also ask for handoff instructions, renewal responsibilities, recovery methods, and the process for making future changes. Managed service can be valuable; being unable to leave is not the same thing.
Ask the agency: If we change vendors next year, what accounts, source, content, assets, instructions, and recovery access will we receive?
Three common traps in Los Angeles website proposals
Trap 1: A beautiful mockup is treated as the complete specification
A mockup can approve visual direction, but it does not prove rendered content, mobile behavior, metadata, crawler controls, analytics, accessibility, or ownership. Require an acceptance checklist that covers both visible experience and hidden architecture.
Trap 2: “AI optimization” is sold as a special file or schema package
